Love & Hate High Heels

Shoes of every style, material and maker are loved by women, period. But it is the heels that are most coveted. They are everywhere. On magazines, posters, calendars, the internet, movies, dangling around someone’s neck in small precious metal versions – on women’s (and some men’s) feet. No pop celebrity will be caught dead without her skinny Manolos.

What’s in a shoe? Maybe, it was initially intended to protect someone’s feet but shoes have evolved from its practical purpose to its current grand heights. Oftentimes, the higher, the better. Heels are not just foot wear that women simply put on. It’s a statement, a symbol of authority, social stature, femininity, empowerment and joy.

Like traditions and culture, this obsession with high heels gets passed on through generations and how this happens is nothing more than a girl growing up watching her mother or her favorite actress flaunt high heels as if they were jewelry. The love for shoes is and acquired taste and it is a consensual decision that women make to participate in educating the youth.

Women choose to wear them for many reasons and comfort may not even be on the list. Some theorize that heels were invented to punish those who wear them and this theory has a valid point.

Countless accidents and injuries have been caused by these shiny elegant things that women love so much. Does that deter a lady from wearing them? Certainly not. Instead you might hear her say that wearing high heels requires practice and true skill; just like how guns which are meant to protect can kill, heels which are meant to make you feel like the true goddess that you are can hurt if you’re not careful.

Is this why they are also called “killer shoes”? However, it was also said that heels used to have very practical purpose: Egyptian butchers used it to keep their feet off the gore in the workplace, horse riders used it to grip their stirrups better. It just evolved, that’s all.

For smart women, it’s just a matter of choosing wisely. There are high heels that offer more comfort than others; those with chunkier heels often provide more stability.

It is also best to know your limits, a 5-inch pair of stilettos may look breathtaking on the rack but let’s face it, not everyone is built to withstand the challenges of walking around in those sexy yet potentially dangerous heels.

Hate them love them, bottom line is high heels and “the debate” will be around long after this generation has retired to wide, flat sandals.
